National Record Store Day this Sat at Rat Records Camberwell

Tomorrow, Saturday 18 April 2015, is National Record Store Day and our own Camberwell record shop: Rat Records on Camberwell New Road will be marking the day with records and DJs- see flyer below (taken from the Rat Records Facebook page)

Rat Records is always worth visiting for a browse: Camberwell is very lucky to have this shop when so many, it seems, have been forced out of business across London.

Camberwell Co-Op reopening 27 March 2015

A leaflet drops through my door telling me that the Co-Op food shop at 28 — 32 Denmark Hill is set to reopen this Friday, 27 March 2015, after a refurbishment.

The shop, formerly Somerfield, and before that Kwik Save, closed around two weeks ago and I feared that we had lost it. I hope that the refurb will be along the lines of the Camberwell New Road Co-Op with a bright and airy feeling.

On the subject of Camberwell retail does anyone know what plans there are for the Peacocks site (ex-99p, ex-Woolworths) on Denmark Hill? I havent seen any signs up advertising it for rent and there doesnt seem to be any activity on the site. There was a planning application made last April to redevelop the site to provide 42 student accommodation rooms over three floors but it is unclear from the Southwark site at what stage the application is at.

With a Premier Inn being built on Coldharbour Lane in Brixton maybe there is scope for a hotel? Camberwell is on Travelodge’s list of target locations and it would be good to have a larger more mass market hotel in the area. We shall see — anything but another betting shop!

Come to Camberwell for Coffee

Following on from the previous post on Camberwell coffee it seems that development of the Camberwell cofee ‘scene’ is continuing — two new arrivals are worth highlighting — Daily Goods and the Pigeon Hole.

Daily Goods is due to open very very soon (maybe this week or next?) at 36 Camberwell Church Street. According to this article on sprudge.com the new shop will combine American influences with the proprieter having moved from a concession in Kinko Cycles in Soho to this new venture in Camberwell.

A coffee shop that has fairly recently opened is the Pigeon Hole Cafe at 2 Datchelor Place (just down from the Flying Fish) — it is a cafe and antique shop, its website states “Everything you see inside – from the tables and chairs, to the artwork on the walls – is for sale, whilst the cafe will provide customers with the best of local food and drink, sticking to simple recipes with an aim to excite the taste buds.” The cafe’s website features lots of enticing food and cakes

Cant wait to wake up and smell the new Camberwell coffee!

Edited to add: According to their Twitter account Daily Goods Camberwell opened on Thursday 24 July

Take the 148 Boris Bus to Camberwell

Just a quick update to relay the exciting news that from this Saturday, 15 February 2014, the 148 Camberwell to White City bus route will be operated by New Routemasters aka ‘Boris buses’. This is the first bus route in South London which will feature the new bus.

The 148 of course is used by many media types as it travels to the BBC — Today Programme presenter and Camberwell resident Justin Webb is a regular user of the service.

Two cheers for the new bus
However as with so many things in Camberwell it seems we go two steps forward, one step back as the Routemasters on this route, according to the SE1 website, will not be operating with an open platform at the back and will not have a conductor on board. This removes one of the main advantages of the new buses for which we as London tax payers are paying a premium.

Cycle cafe to open in Camberwell?

Exciting news — we may  will be getting a Cycle cafe here in Camberwell.

According to local blog Sansom Street cycle shop, cafe, bar Cycle PS which already operates on Newington Butts near to Elephant and Castle is considering opening a second shop in the old Tadim’s building on Camberwell Church Street.

Edited to add: We have had confirmation from Cycle PS that they are opening shortly — a comment was left here
“Hello! I’m commenting on behalf of Cycle PS, we are very excited about setting up our second branch of Cycle PS in Camberwell, and can’t wait to fix all of the camberwellians bikes. If you guys have any requests/suggestions I would love to hear them. Kind regards Harvey”

And in other exciting restaurant related news I see a new Italian  restaurant Gusto has opened up on Denmark Hill next to Pizza Hut and  opposite Nandos — walking past the other day I thought it looked good and might be worth investigating further. Has anyone been?
