News Roundup: Things to See and Do

Time slipped away from me before I could promote this year’s Camberwell Free Film Festival. It’s halfway through already, but you can still see some great films between now and Monday.

The Southwark Community Action Network are organising a petition in support of reopening Camberwell station. If you want to help, you can print a copy and pass it round your local networks for signing.

Camberwell Arts are running another Open Studios event, on the weekend of 16th-18th June. If you’re an artist, maker or creative with a studio in the area, and want to take part, the deadline for applications has been extended to 10th April.

Camberwell Fair is back this year, and back on the Green after taking place in Burgess Park in 2016. It’s going to be a two-day event, on 22nd and 23rd of July. If you want to be involved in the organisation you can get in touch with them now; official applications for stallholders and performers will follow soon.

Finally, local coffee roasters and social enterprise, Old Spike, opened their new café, bar, and roastery, Spike+Earl, last weekend. It’s in the old Town Hall on Peckham Road and was such a success on the first day that they ran out of food for the weekend. A great spot to get some afternoon sun.

  1. Sadly Spike&Earl has not delivered in regards to their opening times on Sunday of 8AM and food. I can forgive last week’s opening weekend chaos as part of their teething pains but it happened again this weekend. A friend and I arrived at 8:30 and the door had just opened. We waited for at least 15 minutes for the tables to be set up outside. Then we were told that there were only drinks being served until 9AM. The menus arrived around 9:30 after our coffee orders were placed. I caught a glimpse of the chef arriving with 2 orange Sainsbury bags… our breakfast? As we waited my friend had ordered a hard as rock croissant that had to be heated for a hint of freshness to prevail. As we looked around, other people who had arrived later than us were being served. Our breakfast finally arrived at around 10AM. Spike and Earl sausages… NOT! more like TASTE THE DIFFERENCE Sainsbury brand and an overcooked over easy fried egg. I asked for HP sauce but they did not have any??!!!! My friend was disappointed as well with the stale sourdough bread that barely held his bacon that were streaky, flavourless greasy strips.
This is not good … if you cannot deliver please spare us all your false advertising untill you can guarantee service, quality and for goodness sake true opening times!!!!
    Hipsterland Hell!

    1. Have heard a few other people complain about the service too, but looks like they’re very aware of it; last night they announced on Twitter: “CLOSED FOR TRAINING | We will be closed Monday-Wednesday this week to provide comprehensive training to our growing team.” Then today, this: “JOIN OUR TEAM | We are looking for experienced front of house staff! Immediate start.”
