The Camberwell Quarterly

A new edition of the Camberwell Society’s Camberwell Quarterly is out. There are articles on Groundwork’s 10 years of work (including much rescaping of Burgess Park (so imagine how it used to look!)), the fall in graffiti in the area, the Camberwell Community Council, ‘Save our Streets’ (which has been successful in removing clutter such as disused roadsign posts) and two reviews of Willow restaurant (both of which contradict mine), as well as the usual notes on planning applications in the ward.

Nothing scintillating and no surprise news, but worth the £1 if you want to keep abreast of what’s going on.

I wanted to have a quick word about this blog, also. A lot of really interesting stuff goes on that other readers find out about before I do, and I don’t always have the time to keep as up-to-date as I’d like due to life-commitments. Would it help if I created a ‘guest’ login or a page to submit new stories that would be sent to my email — or perhaps just an email alias that you could send stories to? What are your thoughts?

  1. Why don’t you turn it into a group blog that others can contribute to but you retain editorial control over?

  2. Good point, Ben. I don’t want to open this up completely so it becomes a forum, but I do want a way to have it updated more often. Perhaps one or two other contributors and a page to submit news stories is the way forward.

By the way, your comments keep getting identified as spam, not sure why. I’ll see if I can do anything about it, but in the meantime pardon the inconvenience.

  3. I think your PC/Mac has developed critical abilities and can now identify the true worth of most of my comments.

I’m not sure why, but I’d be uncomfortable with being a ‘guest contributor’.

  4. That’s fine, I won’t force you to have a login! I’m trying to make this into a less top-down blog, and I’m grateful to everyone who contributes whether it’s by reading, commenting or posting.

  5. On toms 6pm local news i.e. Thursday there’s a Tv comp for the leisure centre to be done up its a head to head with another centre and it depends on no. of votes…poster in Wordsworth bookshop…so get all your mates to vote and lets get the sports centre revamped!!

  6. In spirit of ‘interesting stuff’ I thought I’d get in touch for a bit of shameless self-publicity.
C3 (camberwell composers collective) is a group of young classically-trained composers (largely resident in Camberwell) who formed in 2003 and have been putting on 3 gigs a year in The Crypt.
Things have been going well for us and our profile is growing (concerts coming up in the National Portrait Gallery, Aldeburgh Festival and as part of the 2006 IF Festival)
Our gigs are something a bit different from your normal classical concerts with collaborations with film makers/DJs and the most exciting classical performers.

Our next concert is coming up on the 19th November at The Crypt (St Giles Church — Camberwell Church Street) doors from 19:30, tickets £6/5.

Come along and check it out!

‘If you want whacky or bizarre, you can go to the pub-style Pumphouse. There, over a beer or three, you might hear … the Camberwell Composers’ Collective improvising haunting sounds around electronically altered treatments of Britten’s Four Sea Interludes’

  7. I was thinking about the contribution query at the weekend — there seems to be so much good stuff and creative people in Camberwell what we need is a website — however having said that i lack any technical expertise to know how this would work!!
