National Record Store Day this Sat at Rat Records Camberwell

Tomorrow, Saturday 18 April 2015, is National Record Store Day and our own Camberwell record shop: Rat Records on Camberwell New Road will be marking the day with records and DJs- see flyer below (taken from the Rat Records Facebook page)

Rat Records is always worth visiting for a browse: Camberwell is very lucky to have this shop when so many, it seems, have been forced out of business across London.

Camberwell Co-Op reopening 27 March 2015

A leaflet drops through my door telling me that the Co-Op food shop at 28 — 32 Denmark Hill is set to reopen this Friday, 27 March 2015, after a refurbishment.

The shop, formerly Somerfield, and before that Kwik Save, closed around two weeks ago and I feared that we had lost it. I hope that the refurb will be along the lines of the Camberwell New Road Co-Op with a bright and airy feeling.

On the subject of Camberwell retail does anyone know what plans there are for the Peacocks site (ex-99p, ex-Woolworths) on Denmark Hill? I havent seen any signs up advertising it for rent and there doesnt seem to be any activity on the site. There was a planning application made last April to redevelop the site to provide 42 student accommodation rooms over three floors but it is unclear from the Southwark site at what stage the application is at.

With a Premier Inn being built on Coldharbour Lane in Brixton maybe there is scope for a hotel? Camberwell is on Travelodge’s list of target locations and it would be good to have a larger more mass market hotel in the area. We shall see — anything but another betting shop!

Thurs 13th Nov, 7:30pm, Peckham Pelican — 92 Peckham Road, London SE15 5PY

Come and join us at the Peckham Pelican (strictly speaking, still within the Camberwell borders!) to pick up your very own commemorative copy of CATALOGUING CAMBERWELL as well as celebrate…
• Launch of the Christmas Open Studios flyer
• Launch of the Christmas Arts Market
• Introducing the new board of Camberwell Arts
• An exciting announcement about the 2015 festival theme!

There will be music by Winston Skerrit and Cassandra Rutledge, who will showcase work from the 20 Downloads project developed for this year’s festival, followed by The Art of the Magic Lantern — which uses pre-cinema projection equipment to create a new live performance by Nicole Mollett and Frog Morris.

We invited local residents to create a collective catalogue of this year’s festival of 20 commissioned artworks, 20 events and exhibitions that looked back, forwards and sideways at Camberwell and all it has to offer.
The results are Cataloguing Camberwell – a selection of our 20 favourite reviews.
In these pages you’ll find party bags, pop-up concerts and cake-based treasure hunts, the Beast of Camberwell, Eight Wonders of Camberwell and a Camberwell-inspired mug collection.
It’s not your typical catalogue, perhaps — but one that we hope showcases our thriving local arts scene and inspires you to explore Camberwell further.

We are delighted to announce the first ever co-branded Open Studios event!
In the run up to Christmas, the studios and artists of Camberwell will be throwing open their doors to the public and selling their wares to art-lovers and gift-seekers.
From canvases to prints, silver to ceramics, you will find something to suit all tastes and budgets in SE5 this Christmas.

Shop Locally for Christmas. Part 2.

Clearly Camberwell has become a hotbed of artistic tendencies. Or people are getting better at organising. Or it’s Christmas. Or all three.

Why do I say this? Because there seem to be a lot of open studio events, Christmas Markets and also a big auction of artworks by the great and good, as well as the unknown, up at King’s in the next few weeks.

1. Coldharbour Studios and Clockwork Studios both have their open studio events this weekend. The private view is on Friday 6th from 6–9pm, with the studios open throughout the weekend and lots of pressies for you to buy, as well as the odd mince pie and glass of wine I’m sure.

2. Camberwell Arts are hosting “Made in Camberwell” on Saturday 7th from 1–5pm at the Tiger with local artists and designers selling their wares. See their Facebook Page for more details of who is exhibiting.

3. On Thursday 12th December, King’s College Hospital is celebrating its Camberwell centenary  with an auction of 100 artworks by 100 artists who have connections with Camberwell or the hospital. Some of the better known artists who have donated works include Maggie Hambling, Gillian Ayres and Sir Peter Blake, as well as lesser known local artists and designers such as…, ahem, me! (Monkeycat). More details of all the artists can be found here: Together We Can.

There is a private view of Kings’s 100 Artworks Auction at 6pm with the obligatory mince pies and mulled wine before the auction, which starts at 7pm. You need to buy tickets (only £5). You can either get them from the Friend’s Gift Shop on the ground floor of the Cheyne Wing in Kings College Hospital, or buy them online from Rosebery’s, the auctioneers who are conducting the event. You can get them here: BUY TICKETS.

4. Mini Moderns, the amazingly talented design chappies, are holding their own open studio event from Friday 13th — Sunday 15th December, with the private view on the Friday evening. Well worth a look, especially if you’re thinking wallpaper and home wares are just what you need to get someone for Christmas.

5. The Farmer’s Market on Camberwell Green are also holding a Christmas Market on Saturday 14th December from 10am-4pm. Alongside the usual food stalls, there will also be live music and carols, artists and general Christmas good cheer.

Camberwell Christmas

I can’t think of any more events at the moment but if you know of any, just get in touch or leave a comment and I will update.

Update: On Saturday 14th there’s also a Christmas Bazaar at The Tiger. — Peter

There will be a Made In Camberwell Christmas sale at The Tiger on 7th December.
