Camberwell Arts 2015: Exhibit your art at Camberwell Open.

Arts-Festival

It’s 25 days until the 21st Camberwell Arts Festival!

Did you know we are the longest running visual arts festival in the UK?
It is organised by a group of hard-working volunteers who work to seek to promote the arts in this unique area of South-East London, through unveiling emerging talent and collaborating with internationally acclaimed artists, designers and creatives.

We want this year’s Festival to be a feast for the eyes…a feast for the soul…a feast for the stomach!

Running from the 20th-28th June, this year’s festival is FEAST — but it’s not just food — it’s also about celebrating the cultural feast that exists in Camberwell in the form of art, performance and creativity.

The programme is fit to bursting, and has been sent to the printers. We launch on the 1st June, and will be keeping you updated with all of the very latest news, such as…

The Camberwell Open

thecamberwellopen.org
thecamberwellopen.org

Last autumn, we gained a whole host of new trustees keen to share their talents. Amongst them was Gita Joshi: a Camberwell resident and art gallery owner (orsomajor.com) who felt passionate about the manifesto to celebrate the arts in Camberwell and Camberwell through the arts.

Which why this year, she will be curating an inaugural Open Exhibition for all Camberwell artists whether they are leisure painters, semi-professionals or full time artists. The exhibition will present a snapshot of creative practice from artists based in, or associated with Camberwell.

Artists including students and those who paint or produce art for leisure are encouraged to submit to see their work hung, and on sale, alongside some known names from the art scene. It is set to be a great event, and there will be three prize winners selected by a jury.

Camberwell has several life drawing groups as well as artists’ studios used by full time artists. The exhibition aims to present all of their offerings under one roof so we really can celebrate the gamut of art across Camberwell / SE5.

The exhibition will take place in Camberwell Leisure Centre, Artichoke Place from 5th to 28th June 2015 as part of the Camberwell Arts Festival.

To apply…
Artists need to fill out a simple online form.
A submission fee of £10 per artwork, with up to three submissions from a single artist.
Only 2‑D submissions will be accepted. In the future, we hope to accommodate 3‑D submissions.

We hope you will all dig out your paints, camera, pastels, and pencils and take part.

  2. There’s loads of creative practice in Camberwell, but when are they going to get it right?

Has anyone been to the Crypt recently? What a great place that is. A number of people of taste attended on Saturday night for Jerry Dammers’ from “The Specials” proper-reggae DJ night. The whole thing was analogue, lived-in, relaxed and happy.

  3. Full moon this evening at 5.19pm though it won’t be visible until 8.45pm. This is called the June Moon round these parts.

The clouds will part and the heavenly body appear as a ghostly galleon. They say there’s many a bloke in Camberwell whose missus makes such awesome appearances in the middle of the night like a ship in full sail.

  4. @Dagmar

Speaking as somebody who lived just off the Old Kent Road in the late 70’s/early 80’s it was once possible every Saturday evening to see an abundance of full moons on the then very-lively strip between the Thomas A Becket pub at the junction of Albany Road right up to the flyover where a club called Caesars was situated (now Lidl)

It would almost certainly have caused the monocle of the late great astronomer Sir Patrick Moore to mist over with condensation that is for sure…

  5. Beautiful full moon last night. And thank you Dagmar for settling a pub argument on whether it was full or not!

In sadder news, there is a vigil for Esther Hartsilver, the poor woman who died in the accident last week.

As a driver, I find that junction the most unsettling in Camberwell. The bus lane, the left turn, the pedestrian crossing. It makes it all very difficult to see if it’s safe.

As a pedestrian, it seems safe. Maybe that’s the problem.

  6. In other news, the new flats on the old estate at Elephant look awful. Even before they started, the redevelopment plan looked stupid. Now they’re building stuff, it’s on track to be monumentally crap for just about everyone… even the Singaporean buy-to-let “investors”.

More positive, someone on here mentioned the view of St Paul’s looking up Camberwell Road. I notice that every time now. Let’s hope they don’t build one those ridiculous glass and steel towers in the way. Modern architecture in London has, on the whole, not been very good.

  7. @monkeycat

The problem with that junction is a mixture of bad architecture and poor town planning which goes back 40 odd years. I don’t feel safe crossing there even as a pedestrian.

Laissez-faire unregulated free market economics and the short-term property speculation for a fast buck which more often than not guarantees a poor standard of architecture — the council waves through such developments because the edict from high on above is “Any development is good development” This goes for practically the whole country really. Whoever the councillor or individual in charge of town planning happens to be at any given time is on a hiding to nothing …the system makes it difficult for anybody who may feel principled to take a stand.

The bus stops, butterfly walk, car park & the Orpheus Street one way system with the standing buses have been thrown together with inevitable results. Add to this the Wren Street flats plus the pedestrianisation of Daneville Road — which was well intentioned but seems like a lost opportunity…its obvious that it all could of been designed and planned so much better — but the legacies of deregulation under this economic theory — which is blamed on the big bad pantomime villain that was M Thatcher continue to bite today.

I didn’t know the cyclist in question but it somehow feels personal…

    1. Because this area is my home

    2. I’ve scampered across Orpheus Street on many an occasion to avoid a sharply turning vehicle.

    There it is

    Thank you all

    I drink my tea

  9. The programme brochure is great — picked it up from Cowling’s on Orpheus Street. Was looking at the tributes and nearly got head knocked off by beeping buses sweeping at speed round the corner.

Problem is it’s an essential part of the one-way system that leads up Coldharbour Lane.

It is an incredibly dangerous corner — all traffic is under pressure from behind to rush round that corner. There are near-misses all the time.

My advice to pedestrians and cyclists is don’t go anywhere near it.

  10. Afternoon all
Our latest newsletter is ready for your perusal bit.ly/CamberwellArts12DaysToGo
    See you in 12 days.

  11. That’s good. Camberwell has the a in arts like Typhoo puts the T in Scunthorpe.

    Ah, you see, it’s started.

There was a good turnout at the vigil and commemoration for Esther Hartsilver yesterday evening, the cyclist killed on the corner of Orpheus Street last week.

To think that a physio at King’s aged just 31 should be killed in our parish like that is truly shameful and dreadful for us. Many people get involved in intense discussions on social media about what they see as fussing-and-fighting big issues about important morals. But it is plain that often just staying or being alive is as important or impossible as it gets.

  12. Popped in to the Camberwell Open exhibition at the Leisure Centre a couple of days ago. Some very good pieces on display including a couple from Monkeycat himself.

  13. Thank you @PK36. Most kind.

Look out for the rest of the series in a Sweetie trial around Camberwell during the festival. Find them all and you’ll get a free quarter of sweeties!

  14. I read on Twitter that Cool Cats’ Cafe on Southampton Way is unfortunately closing this weekend. I didn’t go there too often as it is a bit out of the way for me, but a shame they couldn’t make it work.

  15. Looks like a pretty serious refit for the Mike + Ollie cafe/restaurant next to Caravaggio’s — they’ve removed the whole shopfront so it looks like it will be a while till that opens.
Am hoping for a big turnout at the Made In Camberwell arts and food market on the green tomorrow.

  16. My excitement about this venture’s been dampened somewhat since they nearly skewered my 4 year old daughter on a strip of falling aluminium this Wednesday. I’m all for DIY but if you’re going to snap lengths of lively and unwieldy metal from the shopfront during rush hour, a few bollards wouldn’t go amiss!

  17. Hi Everyone
It’s day 4 of the festival! Time flies!

Hopefully you have all gotten involved in some way or other, whether it be at #MadeInCamberwell #Airmail, #MastersOfPop, or the stained glass window at the Tiger, or Sitting on one of the many fantastic new picnic benches, or enjoying poetry and comedy…the list goes on!
Here is a quick reminder about what is on over the next 2 days.

  18. GOOD SHOW, Jordana.

Saturday 4 July is also LYNDHURST PRIMARY SCHOOL FAIR,
a fun event raising money to buy stamps to post those kids to far-away places with strange-sounding names.

This year, Circo Rum Baba will be spicing the fair up with their otherworldly antics.

The school is on Grove Lane next to the Ortus Building. Why not drop by then continue to Lettsom Gardens summer party which is on that same Saturday this year? Craft beer will be available to send those parents into outer space with its B vitamins and hops.

  19. Awful what happened to the young woman who was attacked and lost her baby the other week. Don’t know what to say other that it’s terrible and frightening. We really hope she recovers, obviously.

When future historians mine this website for information about life in 21st century Camberwell they’ll find this post and know it’s not all art schools and cafe openings around here.

  20. But on to other news… I really must get my act together and see more of the Camberwell Arts Festival.

Did I read there’s a festival/music/performance type thing planned for Camberwell Green? It was great when they held it in Lucas Gardens.

  21. And venturing slightly from Camberwell to Peckham:

    * I’ve got a new favourite cafe: Persepolis, which now does meals and snacks. It is 100% VEGETARIAN and excellent. Highly recommended.

    * The Sun Café on Havil Street seems to have new people running it. The pizzas are more mainstream now, but still good. The humus pizza I had the time before last was a bit too interesting. It’s getting a bit busier now as well and has got quite a nice feel on Friday evenings.

    * The Peckham Pelican is running comedy nights. Can’t say the Pelican really does it for me. It feels too contrived. But maybe that’s because I normally feel like the oldest person in the place, aged 41.

    * The Hope is a brand-new purpose-built pub in Peckham by the leisure centre / Kentish Drovers. I poked my head-in on the way to the library. Looks good. Well, it looks chintzy, which is weird, but also good.

    * I’ve been around Rye Lane quite a bit more recently, for various reasons. There’s a good falafel van halfway along called MoMos. It’s not vegetarian, but it’s good anyway. They guy who runs it plays Arab house music and serves mint tea while you wait.

    * Franks is open. They seem to have more or less abandoned the pretence that it’s an art thing, but the view is still worth the trip. The kids from Lyndhurst School are doing some kind of performance there, so that’s cool.

    * There’s also a rooftop bar on top the Bussey Building. Actually, there is a bunch of newish bars along Rye Lane and the Copeland industrial park. We went to Four Quarters for the first time the other week, The Nines, Ali Barbar, and so on. Can’t say any of them are really my scene, but hey…

  22. Actually, the best thing at this time of year is to hang out in the parks and public gardens. We’re lucky in that sense to have so many places go and be outdoors in the semi-nature.

  23. I think I lost some keys on the road at the back of Morrisons today. If anyone finds them please let me know? Thanks!

  24. I lost a few quid in Morrisons today. Left my change in the self checkout! Silly me!

On happier themes, it’s Open Studios tomorrow evening and all weekend. Please come along to all the studios, but especially Coldharbour Studios. Not just because it’s my studio but between us and Clockwork Studios we have over 40 artists taking part, and several other studios nearby.

Tomorrow night we’ll have a some lovely food on offer too, as well as the customary art and beer!

    Details are here!

    http://us6.campaign-archive2.com/?u=5be59553fa4e6bb5d6550f78b&id=5ad071e711&e=%5BUNIQID%5D

I’m also doing a Polaroid Transfer workshop on Saturday from 12–3pm. More details in the link above.

And finally, you may have noticed some pictures of sweets dotted around Camberwell. Yep. You guessed it, that’s my fault. Again, details on the link above! It’s the A‑Z Sweetie Trail and it’s all part of the Camberwell Arts Festival. Find all the sweets and get a free quarter of sweets!

  25. Just like to remind everyone that the Pigeon Hole is still open despite the works outside. I just love it . Its the cafe we all dream of having in our area and those two girls do so much other stuff in the community.
Please can we stick to Camberwell on this blog. I know Peckham is not far but its only up and coming because the Evening Standard said so and then all the cultural sheep follow.

Do we want that in Camberwell …all those people from from west london! Mind you I used to live in Shoreditch in the 1980’s so nothing surprises me…

    Thanks so much
    Hope to see you there
    Jordana

  27. Some major demolition work seems to be going on behind the old Peacock’s doors: they’ve let the sky in! Anyone know what’s planned?

  28. @lucas. It looks like a dodgy landlord job. Their planning application to make student halls was well and truly rejected so probably they “accidentally” knocked a few walls down.

  29. Just wanted to say thank you to Jordana and everyone else involved in putting on the Camberwell Arts Festival this year. I picked up a lovely Camberwell tote bag from the market, a great print from the Camberwell Open exhibition and visited a few of the open studios. Highlight for me was the Masters of Pop choir event in St Giles Church.
Well done to all involved and I look forward to next year’s event.

  30. Does anyone know when the Peckham Chamber Orchestra are performing next? I have a feeling they were due to play in July some time, but can’t track anything down online.…

    Ta!

  31. I think part of the mystique of the PCO is that they perform when they are ready. Even then, the joint is packed and they have to turn people away.

Tomorrow, without question, is LYNDHURST PRIMARY SCHOOL SUMMER FAIR on Grove Lane, next door to Ortus, that new Institute of Psychiatry fun building.

Come along tomorrow afternoon 2–6pm and see what it’s like when a whole new Mindcraft-inspired building is thrust into the playground, for God’s sake, of a Victorian junior school.

The new building probably will never be finished — it has built-in problem issues to do with the unfulfilled-promise school of building, so to speak. Balfour-Beatty is about shareholder value, not little kids.

David Cameron and such Etonian buffoons — Boris Buffoon — are not natural Londoners. Their spiritual heartland is somewhere in the Cotswolds where the main crop is shareholder value.

Why have state education, anyway, when we are so close to hardcore Dulwich with its crammers? I exempt Dulwich College from this — that’s a great school in every way. Otherwise there are more private schools in Dulwich than anywhere else in the country.

Come to Lyndhurst Fair and see the spiritness of the kids, teachers, parents and others. It’s a lovely world, Lyndhurst Primary School. The kids of people who pay loads of dosh for them to be crammed and hothoused together in Dulwich are really missing out.

    Circo Rum Baba will officiate.

  32. The Lyndhurst School Fair was a great success. Many thanks to everyone who came to drink Peckham-brewed beer from the barrel. Some of the small boys seemed dafter than ever.

The next cultural event of note is the friendly between Dulwich Hamlet and Peterborough United, the most unfashionable professional club in England after Swindon Town. This takes place on Wednesday evening at 7.45pm and will see the return of Hamlet hero Erhun Oztumer, who was whisked away last season from the Tuscan hilltown of DHFC to the industrial-estate flatlands of Peterborough.

Goal hero Erhun, we salute you.
